          2. World Language Program

            LaSalle World Language Program

As a CPS World Language Magnet School, language is central to LaSalle’s mission, and almost daily instruction is provided in Spanish, Mandarin, French or Italian for students from kindergarten through eighth grade.  In addition, students use Rosetta Stone for supplementary online learning, averaging ½ hour to 1 hour per week depending on the student’s grade.

            Language Instruction

LaSalle broadly follows the instructional standards described by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), summarized by the Five Cs:

            • Communication
            • Cultures
            • Connections
            • Comparisons
            • Communities

The emphasis is on teaching students what they can do and understand with another language, not just learning words.  As part of this approach, other classes at LaSalle may incorporate foreign language or cultural elements, e.g., in books read or songs learned.
